Margaret Neilson Armstrong (1867 - 1944) was a pioneering book artist who forged a path for other women artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries into the fields of book decoration and cover design, which at that time was a profession solely occupied by men. According to Gullans and Espey, Margaret Armstrong became “the single most important woman in this branch of decorative design” after Sarah Wyman Whitman, and was a “source of inspiration and encouragement” to women who would follow in her path, notably Amy Sacker, Marion Louise Peabody, Amy Richards, Lee Thayer and Bertha Stuart.
