NURSE AND SPY IN THE UNION ARMY THE ADVENTURES AND EXPERIENCES OF A WOMAN IN HOSPITALS, CAMPS, AND BATTLE-FIELDS

8vo (5½” x 8½”). pp. 384. Original publisher's brown cloth stamped with border decorations in blind on both boards; Titles stamped in gilt on spine. Includes engraved frontis. of the author by George E. Perine and 8 additional engraved illustrations. A historical narrative of Sarah Edmondson's time serving as a soldier in the Union army during the Civil War.

At this time, women were not permitted to enlist, so Edmondson cross-dresses as a man and assumed the identity of "Private Franklin Thompson" who served as a male nurse interspersed with stints as a Union spy. While serving as spy, Edmondson assumed many disguises and successfully completed 11 missions. Following her time in the army, Edmondson wrote Nurse and Spy in the Union Army as a memoir of her military service.

This first edition of Nurse and Spy in the Union Army was published in Hartford in 1864, and was followed by the De Wolfe, Fiske publication of the book in Boston as The Female Spy of the Union Army in 1864 as well as the Jones Brothers & Company's 1864 release of Nurse and Spy in the Union Army in Philadelphia. The book was extremely successful and was reissued by Williams many time before 1900. The 1865 Williams release is common, but this true first edition is quite scarce. A sturdy, square copy with some fading to the cloth and light edge wear.
