Contemporary full calf with a brown spine label with a smooth spine divided into 6 compartments by gold double rules. Speckled edges. The first edition of this detailed contemporary account of the events of the War of 1812. "The Sketches" were originally issued in 8 numbers during the war, and were collected together in the present volume for the first time. The author states on the verso of the title page: "Readers, who may not have perused this work, as it progressed from the press, will perceive, that these numbers were commenced, and that part of them were written for a family record, while the war was continually proclaiming its events from the embattled field." Authorship been variously attributed to Gideon Minor Davison, one of the publishers, and to Samuel P. Wilson (Sabin). A very good copy with general wear and rubbing to the extremities; starts the top of both joints and a small ( ”) chip in the spine leather and intermittent light to moderate toning of the text.
