C8vo (4 ” x 7¾”). 10 volumes. Binding design in gold on smooth green cloth by Frank Hazenplug of an intricate Art Nouveau poppy and buds. Includes twelve portraits of Poe and his family, chiefly as frontispieces, 20 plates by Sterner; three engravings of Poe's homes, and one reproduction of a Poe manuscript. The first three volumes were bear the copyright date of 1894, but were not issued until January, 1895; others dated 1895 and were issued at intervals between 1895 and March 1896. Stone and Kimball spared no expense on what is still remains today the standard edition of Poe with introductions and annotations by Stedman and Woodberry, who were considered the finest Poe scholars of the time. This was considered to be the most ambitious publishing project ever undertaken by Stone & Kimball. A very good + set with some occasional bubbling of the cloth and a few light scratches; the contemporary book plate of Albert Carl Lehman on each pastedown. Scarce as a complete set.
