Unsigned binding design by Charles Ricketts first used on Methuen's 1905 limited edition of De Profundis in gold on white buckram of the titles and three Japanese Mon-like circles, with one containing a bird escaping through prison bars, the second containing the freed bird, and the third containing ocean waves and a star. Includes the cast list for the first production of the play in 1895. Titles in gold on the spine. Handmade paper with deckled edges; t.e.g.The text for the First Collected Edition of Wilde's works was taken in most instances from the last editions that were under the supervision of the author, in this case, the Osgood, McIlvaine & Co.'s 1891 edition of Wilde's short stories that included Lord Arthur Savile's Crimes, The Canterville Ghost, The Sphinx without a Secret and The Model Millionaire. The Portrait of Mr. W. H. is from Blackwood's Magazine (July 1899), and is here printed for the first time in book form. Poems in Prose is from The Fortnightly Review (July, 1894) and is here printed for the first time in book form. The Rise of Historical Criticism is from the privately printed 1905 Sherwood Press edition of 225 copies whose text was from Wilde's original 1879 manuscript entry for Oxford's English Essay Prize.The Charles Rickett's binding design was first used on Methuen's 1905 limited edition of De Profundis. The First Collected Edition of Wilde's works remains authoritative to this day and is one of the more lasting tributes to Wilde's memory. A very good + copy of this important edition of Wilde's short works with the book plate of historian and novelist Paul Horgan (1903 - 1995), a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for history on the front pastedown; slight tanning to the spine and faint soiling to the covers; Internally near fine.
