8vo (5¼” x 7 ”). pp. 307 + publisher's advts. First revised edition that includes an additional Melville story. Publisher's embossed cloth in dark green with the titles in gold on the spine. Includes frontis map. The author's first book partly based on his 1842 experiences on Nuku Hiva Island (part of the Marquesas Islands) in the South Pacific in 1842. Melville was a crew member aboard the whaling ship Acushnet, and deserted with Toby Greene (Richard Tobias Greene) on the Marquesas Islands, where he lived on Nuku Hiva with the indigenous Tai P people for a month before he escaped on an Australian merchant ship after the Tai P decided to cannibalize him. The book assured Melville's fame as "The man who lived among the cannibals". This revised edition includes Melville's sequel to Typee that details of the escape of his shipmate, Richard "Toby" Greene from the Tai P . Melville thought Greene had died among the Tai P ; Green also thought Melville was their victim until they reunited later in the United States.A very good copy with light wear to the extremities; light scattered foxing, and a moisture ring to the front board. Wright I:1870.
