Unsigned publisher’s binding by Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton in smooth green cloth gold stamped with titles, a stableman, horse and inn; spine stamped in gold with titles and carriage whip; green end papers; a.e.g. Frontis. with tissue guard and 214 b/w line block illustrations by Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton, including full page illustrations, headpieces, tailpieces, and textual vignettes. Originally released as a quarto in 1888, Macmillan entirely rearranged the text and reduced the illustrations for this issue. A very good copy with bookplate of Herbert Morton Saumenig on the front pastedown. Light scuffing to the boards, light fading to spine and light chipping to corners as well as head and and tail of spine (usual with Cranford bindings). Text block in beautiful condition - clean and bright. Part of the Macmillan Cranford Series. Balston I 6; Rogerson 6. Coaching Days and Coaching Ways was a very popular book at the turn of the 20th century and described the ups and downs of traveling by coach and horse in in 19th century England. The book became so popular for those missing the simple days before the industrial revolution that it spawned a line of Staffordshire dishware by Ridgway Pottery featuring Hugh Thomson's artwork from the book on every thing from serving dishes to teacups.
