R8vo (10” x 6½”). pp. [9 -10]; 11; xii; 13 – 212; 3 preliminary blank leaves, list of illustrations, text in double columns. Bound up from the original parts. Twenty-four full page illustrations after Cruikshank etched on steel by John Yeager, with plates 13 through 24 bearing the names of both Cruikshank and Yeager. Contains the “Fireside plate”, which was cancelled after having appeared in only a few copies of the earliest English issue, and is consequently scarce. Beautifully rebound in quarter rose cloth over nonpareil marbled paper in rose, blue and white with titles gilt stamped on two black leather spine labels. The text of this scarce issue was copied from the original parts as published in Bentley’s Miscellany, and as such show Dickens’ original textual intent that was lost to editing in the English bound editions. The double column pages in this issue include duplications of those pages repeated in the succeeding part, and includes a note from the publisher apologizing for the comparative lack of illustrations in the August 1838 issue, promising that they would be made up in the next issue. Binding: VG+; Illustrations: VG with the exception of pp. 67,109 and 200, which have tape repairs to the verso. Text: VG with small stains scattered throughout and a few closed tears that do not affect the text. Podeschi A31; VanderPoel B89; Wilkins 358
